Transparency and collaboration are key factors to our success. We are therefore happy to launch the first instalment of our new Department Spotlight series in which we will present a different department on a monthly base. This month, meet the Global Training Department! We sat down with Rachel Tomcsik, Global Training Director, to learn more about the challenges and adventures her team is facing.

Department Spotlight

Meet the Global Training Department

Please tell us a little bit about yourself!

I have been in the learning and development space for almost 20 years. I started as a Technical Writer and moved into academia as a college/university professor, where I discovered my passion for instructional design. After transitioning into that space, I completed my PhD in Education with a specialization in Instructional Design. Most recently, I became part of Markem-Imaje when Systech was acquired and now I am proud to lead our Global Training team. Outside of work, I have an 11-year-old son who is my world, and I spend a lot of time at baseball and football fields watching him compete.

How is your department structured?

We are a global team, with colleagues in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. In 2021, we re-organized the team as a way to better position ourselves to meet the needs of the business. We are now structured based on pillars: Content, Governance, Delivery, and Technology. All the pillars have their own specific areas of focus, but they also work closely together under one unified strategy. We also work closely with the Product Divisions and local trainers to ensure alignment on training design and delivery.
What is your mission statement and why?

The mission of the Global Training team is to provide Sales and Technical training, inclusive of all product lines, to support Markem-Imaje employees and partners in achieving their business goals. Ultimately, our job is to provide training as one of the tools that our employees and partners can use to contribute to their success within the organization. Successful people will then support and encourage the success of the business.

In your opinion, what are the major challenges you are facing?

We have worked with a cross-functional team to identify areas of improvement, and there is a lot of work to be done. We have identified key priorities for the remainder of 2022 and early 2023, so our challenge is to remain focused on those initiatives so that we can work through these improvements and see those positive results.
What makes Markem-Imaje special?

As someone who joined Markem-Imaje as part of an acquisition, there is always a certain amount of trepidation with this type of change. What I found was that I was welcomed into the organization and valued as someone who could contribute to the business. The Global Training team became my new home, and I am proud to work with a team of talented people who are fully invested in what they do. So, what makes Markem-Imaje special? The people.

What are your current projects?

Our team is always busy meeting the ongoing needs of the business, but in terms of key projects, we are working on the following (note that this list is not exhaustive, but these are critical initiatives needed to ensure our success):
  • Skills mapping project
  • Live streaming deployment
  • Training unit process development / improvement
  • Global Training / PD improvements, including training policy
  • Training delivery alignment
  • Dashboard development
  • Content steering committee creation
How can fellow employees get in touch?

Please feel free to reach out to the following individuals if you have any questions. You can also reach out to me directly.

Anything else you would like us to know?

I would like to thank the greater Markem-Imaje community for working with us to improve what training can be for our organization. We have a long road ahead of us, but I truly believe we are on the right path. All I ask is for continued collaboration – and a little bit of patience as we move through our improvement initiatives. We will get there – and it is going to be fantastic!
